Pergola Installation That Lets You Choose Sun or Shade

xScape installs pergolas in Northern Virginia, from StruXure louvered roofs to StructureWorks fiberglass and aluminum frames. We size and position each pergola around the patio, deck, kitchen, or pool area it covers.

Open the roof for a sunny afternoon lunch, then close it when clouds roll in during dinner. Or choose fixed rafters to filter the light while keeping the sky in view.

StruXure Louvered Pergolas

StruXure pergolas replace fixed rafters with a motorized aluminum roof, ideal for dining and cooking areas in changing weather. As a StruXure Certified installer, xScape plans the posts and wiring together with the patio or deck below.

  • Adjustable Louvers: Louvers set at any angle between open and closed, so shade can follow the sun through the afternoon.
  • Rain Management: Closed louvers seal together and direct water into internal gutters, then down through the posts, with outlets planned into the site drainage.
  • Rain Sensors: Optional sensors that close the roof automatically when rain begins, even when no one is home.
  • App Control: Adjust louver position and lighting from the StruXure smartphone app.

StructureWorks Pergolas

For an open-rafter look without the upkeep of wood, xScape installs StructureWorks pergolas, manufactured in Fredericksburg, Virginia. These frames keep the traditional post, beam, and rafter look and are built with materials suited to Northern Virginia weather.

  • Fiberglass Pergolas: Columns, beams, and rafters that resist rot, rust, and warping, with customizable column styles.
  • Aluminum Pergolas: Powder-coated aluminum frames in colors coordinated with railings, trim, and furniture.
  • Trex Pergolas: Aluminum-reinforced cellular PVC and Trex composite, coordinated with Trex decking below.
  • Shade Options: We select rafter spacing and aluminum shade panels based on how much sun reaches the seating underneath.

Placement, Footings & Comfort Features

A pergola’s position decides which doors, windows, and seating areas fall under its shade. Attached designs must also clear existing gutters, windows, and rooflines.

  • Attached or Freestanding: Connected to the home’s exterior or standing on its own over a patio, deck, pool area, or outdoor kitchen.
  • Footings & Support: Post footings sized for the soil, slope, and weight of the frame.
  • Lighting & Fans: Integrated, dimmable lighting and outdoor-rated fans for evenings and still summer days.
  • Outdoor Heating: Bromic and Infratech heaters mounted with the clearances each model requires.

Pergolas FAQs

What is the difference between a pergola and a pavilion?
A pergola has an open or adjustable roof, so light and air pass through. A pavilion has a solid roof that blocks sun and rain at all times. Choose based on whether you want to see the sky or need constant cover overhead.
Closed louvers stop rain from coming through the roof, but open sides still let wind-driven rain reach the edges of the space. Set furniture back from the perimeter, or ask about retractable side screens if storms tend to blow in from one direction.
Possibly, but the deck’s framing and footings must support the posts. xScape evaluates the existing structure first and explains whether reinforcement is needed. A failing or aging deck may be better rebuilt alongside the new pergola.
Requirements depend on the size, whether it’s attached to the house, any electrical work, and your county: Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, or Fauquier. Many HOAs also review pergola height, color, and placement. As your pergola contractor, xScape submits permits before construction and prepares the documents your HOA requests.
