Josh Desilets: The Builder Behind Your Private Escape

Owner of xScape | Northern Virginia Landscape Design & Construction

The chairs have a place in the plan before the deck exists. So does the table where everyone will gather, the fire pit they will linger around, and the pool that might become the center of a summer afternoon.

At xScape, that way of thinking has a name: Set the Furniture. It begins with the life a family wants to make room for, then works backward to the design and construction.

Meet Josh Desilets, the owner behind xScape, formerly Deckscapes of Virginia.

Meet Josh, in His Own Frame

Josh Desilets owns xScape, the Northern Virginia company formerly known as Deckscapes of Virginia. Deck building is part of the business’s history; today, its work also brings porches, patios, hardscapes, and custom gunite pools into complete backyard projects.
Josh helps tell those stories, too. He creates video content himself, and xScape’s project footage includes him speaking on-site. In a September 2026 meeting, he said he wanted to plan his videos alongside the company’s photography so each project spotlight contributes to a story, rather than appearing as an unrelated post.

His involvement extends beyond approving the finished photograph to helping explain what the company creates.
He is equally direct about how proposals should be discussed. “We frown heavily on emailing people proposals just blindly,” Josh explained. He prefers an in-person presentation, whether at the showroom or another meeting, with web presentations available when appropriate.

One Backyard, Considered Together

A family considering a porch, deck, and patio should understand how those spaces relate, rather than choose each in isolation.

Pool projects include substantial hardscapes and can also include decks, porches, pool houses, and landscaping, planned as part of the same backyard. The pool is one way the family will spend time there.

The Preparation Behind the Plan

That ambition is backed by a strong preparation process. Josh’s company uses in-house designers and estimators, dedicated pre-construction staff, and one primary project manager accountable for each build.

Weekly progress summaries keep homeowners informed; the post-project meeting includes records, warranty information, service contacts, and a conversation about their experience.

After the Furniture Is in Place

The relationship does not end when the furniture is finally in place. xScape’s stated aim is to support clients for the long term. The service contacts and registered warranties in that final handoff give homeowners somewhere to turn.

The Escape Was There All Along

Deckscapes was a name that grew with the business. As the work expanded, the company needed an identity that could describe more than the deck itself.

The escape was already in the name’s sound. xScape brought it forward. The “X” stands for a variable to solve: the physical pieces of a project and the particular experience a homeowner wants. For one household, that may be a porch for quiet mornings. For another, it may be a pool, patio, and gathering space for family and friends. The name leaves room for both. Bring It All Together gives that idea a practical meaning.

Design, construction, and specialists work toward the same end result. The homeowner has a team coordinating the project’s pieces, rather than a collection of unrelated scopes.

Before the First Board, Picture the First Evening

Set the Furniture

Plan where people will sit, eat, and gather. Let those everyday uses shape the backyard before construction begins.

End in Mind

Build toward the moments that follow: morning coffee, dinner with friends, and a backyard that feels like your own.

Challenge the Work

Keep questioning the methods and details. Use quality checks and client feedback to improve the work, rather than settle into habit.

The Credentials Behind the Craft

xScape holds Virginia Class A contractor license 2705091460, with CBC and RBC classifications, and is a member of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA).
An on-site consultation provides the design and estimating team with homeowner priorities and property information.

Proposals are presented for discussion; revisions return to that team before the project moves into pre-construction.
During construction, weekly summaries explain completed work and what comes next. The post-project handoff includes plans, registered warranty information, and service contacts.
